Unexpected Prophets: The Mob
When the angry mob was yelling for Jesus to be crucified they said "Let his blood be on us and our children." Today Pastor Matt Molstad tells us why every Christian should want Jesus' blood to cover them and their children.
Matthew 27:25, 1 John 1:7
During this Lenten season we’ve been talking about unexpected prophets of the passion. Today we consider the angry mob.
Pilate had tried to do everything he could to release Jesus, to set him free. He knew Jesus was innocent. He certainly wasn’t guilty of death, but the crowd begged to differ. Pilate tried to free him. He tried to argue with them and tried to release him. He even set up a known criminal Barabbas opposite Jesus and offered to free one of them, certain that the crowd wouldn’t take the murderer, but they did.
Pilate, feeling that he was stuck between a rock and a hard place, finally washes his hands in front of the crowd and says “I am innocent of this righteous man’s blood, it is your responsibility” to which the angry mob responded in Matthew 27
And all the people answered, “Let his blood be on us and on our children!” – Matthew 27:25
The crowd was so certain of their judgment that they were willing to have the guilt and weight of it all placed on them and even on their descendants.
We wonder how that crowd could willingly take the guilt and weight of Jesus death upon them. They could say those words “let his blood be on us and on our children,” but for us as Christians those words ring eerily true.
Isn’t it the desire of all Christians that Jesus blood be on them and on their children? Not the blood of the guilt of his death, but his cleansing blood. 1 John chapter 1 verse 7 it says
The blood of Jesus Christ, his Son, cleanses us from all sin. – 1 John 1:7
Just as in the Old Testament as the sacrifices were made for the children of Israel and at times the blood of that sacrifice sprinkled upon the crowd to reassure them that their sins were truly forgiven, don’t we desire that Jesus blood cover us and cover our children? His cleansing blood that forgives our sins?
Thanks be to God that he sent Jesus to die on a cross and to shed his blood for us. By faith we know that we are covered with the forgiveness of sins through that blood. Amen.
